How to Wash a Rain Jacket: A Guide for the Perpetually Puzzled

Let me confess first, my own Gortex rain jacket hadn’t seen the inside of a washing machine in 5 years. I conducted a wholly scientific poll from fellow hikers, and guess what? The majority responded, "I am not familiar with the term wash" So rest assured, you're not alone in this.

STEP 1: PRE-WASH PREP

Empty any leftover nature from your pockets, zip up all the zips, and release any tightened draw cords or velcro. Then, as if preparing for a surgical procedure, cleanse your detergent dispenser or sink of common soap residue. This is important because we'll be using special washing solution meant just for rain jackets. Common laundry detergents can be quite aggressive effecting the waterproof membrane and breathability of your jacket.

STEP 2: THE WASH

Whip out your special wash. I'm using Nikwax Tech Wash. The amount you'll need depends on the type of washing machine or if you're handwashing. So pour in the liquid according to the instructions on your bottle. Set your machine to a delicate mode with warm (but not hot) water. If you are handwashing feel free to replicate a washing machine tub with your dangley arms.

STEP 3: REPROOFING

This step is for those rain jackets that are in dire need of a spa treatment. If your jacket is just dirty but still performs well, you can skip to the drying step. DWR (Durable Water Repellency) is the invisible shield that makes your jacket repel water. Over time, this can be compromised by dirt, sweat and bacteria. Luckily, this DWR can be restored with a coating reapplication. I using the Nikwax TX Direct Wash In. Repeat the washing process but this time with this reapplication solution. You don’t need to dry your jacket in between washes. This also comes in a spray Nikwax TX Direct Spray On where you don’t need water.

STEP 4: DRYING

We've almost made it! Once re-coated, it's time for the drying. You can either tumble-dry it on a low setting or simply air dry. Remember to always check the label on your jacket. Laugh in the face of laundry, no shower can stop you now.

HOW OFTEN SHOULD YOU WASH?

This completely depends on the amount of use your jacket gets. Pay attention to how your jacket is performing, how dirty it’s looking or did you have a particular sweaty hike? Personally, i’m going with 1-2 times a year.
