The Milford Track, New Zealand - Basic Hike Itinerary

The Milford Track is considered one of the crown jewel hikes of New Zealand. It can only be walked in one direction over 3 nights and 4 days, staying in huts along the way. It is 1 of 11 Great Walks of New Zealand. You will need a permit to go on this hike. Permits are released a few months ahead of the hiking season and can sell out within minutes.

ITINERARY

Day 1:

Drive to Te Anau Downs - 2.5hrs from Queenstown. We booked the 11:30am boat with Fiordland Outdoors. They will get you across Lake Te Anau so you can start your hike at Glade Wharf. They also provide other transport options if you don’t have a car.

Hike: Glade Wharf to Clinton Hut
Distance: 5km | 3.1mi. Time: Approx 1 ½ hours

Day 2:

Hike: Clinton Hut to Mintaro Hut
Distance: 17.5km | 10.8mi. Time: Approx 6 hours

Day 3:

Hike: Mintaro Hut to Dumpling Hut
Distance 13km | 8mi. Time: Approx 6-7 hours

Day 4:

Hike: Dumpling Hut to Sandfly Point
Distance: 18km | 11.1mi. Time: Approx 6 hours

Catch the boat from Sandfly Point to Deepwater Basin. (Again organised through Fiordland Outdoors.) To catch the bus back to your car you’ll need to meet the bus outside the Cruise Terminal at Freshwater Basin. Allow 25 minutes to walk from the boat to the bus. Follow the Milford Sound ForeShore Walk.
